MUSCLE 'N MANE
Protecting the Athlete Protects the Sport
I
guess you could say
that Muscle 'n Mane is
a horse that defies the odds. He is a horse with heart and a true survivor. He was abused and criticized. He was quickly dropped in the claiming ranks and stayed there for most of his racing career. After I claimed him, I won a legal battle to keep him. However, the challenges did not stop there. After months of training, I was suddenly told that Muscle 'n Mane should not race again due to an alleged career ending bone-cartilage disease.
Somehow, I was not comfortable with this diagnosis. So, I sought a second opinion from a reputable veterinarian/surgeon. He stated that after completing a radiographic series on Muscle 'n Mane, he was, in fact, sound. I was elated but cautious. I still needed more convincing. After all, Muscle 'n Mane's life was at stake. A copy of the radiographic series was then sent to the renowned University of California, Davis for their review. Their findings from the radiographic impressions showed no significant abnormalities. Although Muscle 'n Mane was free to race in Southern California, some said he was simply not good enough. He was just a Northern California claimer that ran the fair circuit. I still felt that there was something special about Muscle 'n Mane. So, I found a Southern California trainer who was willing to give him a chance. Muscle 'n Mane's morning works were fast. They were not typical of a $6,250 Northern California claimer. Maybe this horse had something to prove.
On February 22, 2008, Muscle 'n Mane was entered in an open allowance race at Santa Anita Park. Someone was overheard saying that he did not belong in this race. He had no business being there. Muscle 'n Mane had his own game plan. He gave these formidable allowance horses a run for their money. He came in second, losing only by a neck.
I would like to dedicate this race to the following special beings:
To all claimer horses that give it their all.
To all the two-legged underdogs who were ever told that they were not good enough. This race is for you. –
